Workshop Details

This workshop is targeted for therapists. The word shame in this workshop is used to describe a person’s identification with a core belief about themselves that is negative and self-defeating and rooted solidly in their core belief about self. Examples would be: I am unlovable, I am inadequate, I am worthless, I am a fraud, I am not enough, etc.

The workshop will focus on developing a common language for therapists and clients regarding shame, will look at the foundation of shame in our culture, develop a definitive shame cycle and intervention on that cycle, identify red flags that a client is in a shame cycle, and focus on how to break the cycle of shame. Barb encourages therapists to bring questions from their practice so that this workshop can be collaborative, useful and practical.

Presented by Barb Tonn, MA, LPC, CAC III

Barb began practicing in 1985 in the fields of substance abuse and sexual addiction. It was during this period that she started her focus on healing shame. Her belief is that, “if I cannot sit in the presence of myself and love myself as I am, I will act out in some hurtful way.” As her work progressed she started taking these concepts into her work with survivors, PTSD, anxiety disorders and other addictions.   She is currently writing a book about shame to provide therapists with more practical tools for their clients, and to help people to intervene on their shame in the most loving and compassionate ways. Her work reflects her own healing journey alongside her 29 years of work with clients.
