Biography

SHARRIE WILLIAMS

 Sharrie Williams

Internationally known and award winning recording artist Sharrie Williams, whose voice pierces the darkness and comes to rest within the confines of your heart makes promises and delivers. On stage she is like a skilled thief who captures your heart and arrests your own preconceived notions leaving you breathless with anticipation. Her music is a mere vehicle that transports the audience from the tombs of life to a safe haven where true healing begins.

Indeed Sharrie Williams has a self-proclaimed style as the Princess of the rockin’ gospel blues. Yet she escapes all stereotypes and emerges as a vocal powerhouse. Her voice pulls down barriers and infiltrates all safe guards meant to keep the modern musician securely locked outside. She is a seasoned professional whose job is to uncover weaknesses and strengths that will allow her direct access to the heart of the matter. Her music sparks hidden embers within the soul of man and ignites a blazing inferno that cannot be extinguished.

Although she was born and raised in Saginaw Michigan, her passion combined with her gifts and talents has taken her on a journey around the world. Her humble beginnings in the projects remind her that anything is possible! Values that come from a musically gifted family remain a strong part of her today. In fact, you can still hear the voices from her past such as her beloved Mother and Grandmother who were Jazz singers in her songs today. ‘Life is what you make of it’ is what her mother, Marion Williams-Jelks, taught this amazing artist. ‘Momma had a never give up and take no prisoners kind of attitude’. My whole family used to sing instead of drowning in the sorrows of life. If you came to visit us we would be singing inside and outside, frying chicken and fish in the kitchen, and dancing all over the living room. This legacy is still alive and well today and will remain for future generations. As a new grandmother, she fully intends to pass the torch down to her grandchildren. Her personal relationship with her husband Norman ‘Pops” Crawford has enhanced and enriched every part of her life.

In 1997, she joined forces with the Wiseguys. She began appearing regularly at the renowned Chicago blues clubs: Kingston Mines and Buddy Guy’s Legends. By 1998, Sharrie Williams and the Wiseguys were on their way to Europe. They began touring in Germany and branched out to Holland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, and Great Britain just to name a few.

On the German label Crosscut Records she released her critically acclaimed album “Hard Drivin’ Woman” in 2004. The music world begins to take notice of her global vision. The international stage opened doors in the local United States Arenas and allowed her perform in many Festivals such as the Chicago Blues Festival and the Poconos Blues Festival. At the Poconos Blues Festival her top selling album played a major role in introducing her to the American blues market. She released “I’m Here To Stay “(2007 Electro-Fi Records) and most recently “Out of the Dark” (2011 Electro-Fi Records). Among her many honors, she has most recently received the prestigious La Academie de Jazz award (from Paris France) for album of the year for “Out of the Dark”. In 2008, she was nominated for Traditional Blues Artist of the year. She was nominated in 2009 and 2012 for Soul Blues Artist of the year. On a personal note in 2012, she was given the creActive award from Germany aptly entitled ‘Star for the Future’ because she is a good role model. She continues to perform all over the globe to sell out audiences.

Over the years, Sharrie has had the opportunity to collaborate with national recording artists, such as Larry McCray, Buddy Guy, KoKo Taylor, Ruth Brown, Mavis Staples, and many others. Her musical influences include KoKo Taylor, Etta James, Tina Turner, Patti LaBelle, and the legendary Billie Holiday. The future is bright for Ms. Williams as she continues to pour oil on the listener through her music like a Good Samaritan. With her infectious laugh and signature love language, life has no limits and no boundaries for this humble artist. This multi-faceted artist adds Minister and global Evangelist to her life. On a daily basis, you can find her preaching the gospel and ministering to the hurting. This added layer of responsibility has increased her visions by leaps and bounds. Her overall passion is an overwhelming love for people of all races, creeds, and colors. Music is her universal love language which carries her message and allows her to embrace people all over the world.

“I love what I do! I can play for five people and feel like I played for 60,000.”

“Having lived the blues, I sing to inspire people not to let the blues get the best of you.”
