Shame Resilience and Addiction Recovery
Stacy Korfist, LMFT, CSA Shane Kennington, LCSW William Feuerborn, LCSW, CSAT-S
Shame is a very painful, disempowering emotion, causing people to want to escape from the very experience of it. Shame leads to disconnection with self and with others. This disconnection is a driver in addictive substance use and addictive processes. However, the recovery process is activated by using shame resiliency tools and daily practices of authenticity, vulnerability, compassion, and courage.
OBJECTIVES Participants will be able to: 1. Identify how shame supports the desire to escape into addiction, and how to demonstrate this to clients. 2. Identify shame resiliency tools to support recovery. 3. Identify core shame triggers and defenses.
