Simone Leigh engages in an object-based, sculptural exploration of black female subjectivity. Her work is structured as an ongoing ethnographic practice, informed by both ancient African and African American object-making, and bridges abstracted forms with iconic images. Leigh's recent series of terracotta and porcelain female busts are noted for distorted features and delicately crafted ceramic roses that sprout up in place of the face or hair. Leigh’s work has recently been presented in a solo exhibition at The Kitchen, New York. In 2011, she was the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, and in 2012 she received a Creative Capital Grant. Her work will be featured in an exhibition at Gallery Wendi Norris, San Francisco, February 6–March 29.

Leigh’s work has also been included in group exhibitions at SculptureCenter, New York; The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; Kunsthalle Wien, Austria; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh; and The AVA Gallery, Cape Town, South Africa. Her work has been featured in several publications, including Modern PaintersThe New YorkerThe New York TimesSmall AxeNka Journal of Contemporary African Art, and EBONY Magazine. She has been an Artist in Residence at The Studio Museum in Harlem, as well as at Hunter College and the Henry Street Settlement. She was the recipient of the first annual LMCC Michael Richards Fund Award for Visual Arts in 2012. Leigh lives and works in Brooklyn.
