Kori Newkirk transforms ordinary objects, such as tin cans and shopping carts, into elegant sculptural installations and mixed-media works. Through a cross-disciplinary practice driven by encounters in the everyday, Newkirk reveals the aesthetic nuance, formal possibilities, and theoretical potential of material arrangements.
Newkirk received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA from the University of California, Irvine. He has had solo exhibitions at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; LAXART, Los Angeles; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego. Notable group exhibitions include the 2006 Whitney Biennial, New York; Dak’Art, the 2006 Dakar Biennial; and the traveling exhibition Uncertain States of America. Newkirk’s work is in the collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Art Institute of Chicago; Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
