With a trickster’s wit, Christian Jankowski creates projects that blur the lines between art, conventional media, and life. Through his projects in video, film, and installation, he implicates unsuspecting collaborators—TV fortune-tellers, hula-hoopers, televangelists—into his comedic disruptions of daily life. Jankowski’s works muse on notions of truth and labor and the effort required to create a transformative work of art.
Jankowski’s work been exhibited internationally, including at Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, Mexico City; the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome; Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden, Germany; Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Germany; the Miami Art Museum; and MIT’s List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge. He has participated in numerous biennials, including the Venice Biennial in 1999, the Whitney Biennial in 2002, and the Taipei and Sydney biennials in 2010. Jankowski recently exhibited a sculpture at City Hall Park, New York, during the exhibition Common Ground, organized by the Public Art Fund.
Christian Jankowski’s lecture is presented in conjunction with Project Los Altos: SFMOMA in Silicon Valley, organized by SFMOMA in collaboration with the City of Los Altos and lead sponsor Passerelle Investment Company, on view November 9, 2013–March 02, 2014.
