Winifred Johnson Clive Foundation Distinguished Visiting Fellow for Interdisciplinary Painting Practices
Brad Kahlhamer creates exuberant, animated paintings that fuse the visionary tradition of Native American art with an expressionistic painting style. Blending imagery from monumental American landscapes with an interest in downtown New York street culture, Kahlhamer extends a singular vision of realms both real and illusory. Early in his career, Kahlhamer toured with a rock band and designed packaging for Topps Chewing Gum—life experiences that continue to inform his painting practice.
Kahlhamer’s work has been exhibited at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri; Anne De Villepoix, Paris; Stephane Simoens, Belgium; Zidoun Gallery, Luxemburg; Deitch Projects, New York; Galleria Francesca Kaufmann, Milan; Exit Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the New Museum, New York; and Socrates Sculpture Park, New York. He is the recipient of prestigious awards in painting, including the Joan Mitchell Award and The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award.
