VAS SOCIAL HOUR: SFAI Café » 6:30–7:30 pm
Join SFAI for a reception in the café before the lectures. The Walter and McBean Galleries are open until 7:30 pm on lecture nights.

Anoka Faruqee creates psychedelic, optical paintings that engage the limits and sensory subjectivity of visual perception. Her illusory and hypnotic works fuse intricate patterns with charged juxtapositions of color to create moiré patterns and other visual effects. The paintings prompt the viewer to engage the chromatic and experiential properties of paint.

Faruqee has exhibited her work internationally, including at MoMA PS1, New York; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; Hosfelt Gallery, San Francisco; and Leo Koenig, Inc., New York. She holds an MFA from Tyler School of Art and a BA from Yale University, and she has attended the Whitney Independent Study Program, the Skowhegan School of Art, and the PS1 National and International Studio Program. Faruqee is the recipient of grants from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation and Artadia. She is currently an associate professor at Yale School of Art, where she is also acting director of graduate studies in the Department of Painting and Printmaking. She is represented by Hosfelt Gallery, San Francisco.
