Event Details

Participate in this two-day symposium and San Francisco mural tour, organized by the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) and the Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco, and consider the legacy of the Mexican mural movement in contemporary art and activism. You’ll hear thoughts and opinions about Rivera’s construction of visual identities and the representation of the human body in today's murals from notable Mexican and American artists, writers, and scholars, including keynote speaker Sandra de la Loza.

The symposium is free and open to the public, but space is limited and advanced registration required. You must purchase $50 tickets in advance for the mural tour and lunch.

Day 1: Keynote and Panel Discussion

Wednesday, July 11, 7:30 – 9:30 pm

Sandra de la Loza, artist and founder of the Pocho Research Society of Erased and Invisible History, will kick off “Diego Rivera and the Mexican Mural Movement: A Contemporary Perspective on Art and Activism” with a keynote address. A panel discussion on Rivera’s construction of visual identities will follow, featuring Claudia Ovando Shelley, PhD from Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, and Prof. Dina Comisarenco and Dra. Ana María Torres, both from Universidad Iberoamericana.

Day 2: Panel Discussion

Thursday, July 12, 6:00 – 8:00 pm

Sara Daleiden, Director of s(o)ul; Ala Ebtekar, artist and SFAI Visiting Faculty; and Prof. Karen Cordero Reiman, Universidad Iberoamericana, will lead a panel entitled “Whose Body? Corporeal Discourse in Muralism and Contemporary Art.” A roundtable discussion will follow featuring symposium speakers from both days of the event and moderated by Nicole Archer, SFAI Department Chair of History and Theory of Contemporary Art.
