Event Details

Maggie Nelson is the genre-defying author of eight books. Her latest nonfiction work The Art of Cruelty: A Reckoning (W. W. Norton, 2011), which examines the aesthetics of violence in contemporary art, was named a Notable Book of the Year by The New York Times. She is also the author of the nonfiction works Bluets (Wave Books, 2009), The Red Parts: A Memoir (Free Press, 2007), and Women, the New York School, and Other True Abstractions (University of Iowa Press, 2007), which was awarded a Susanne M. Glasscock Humanities Book Prize for Interdisciplinary Scholarship. Nelson’s poetry books include Something Bright, Then Holes (Soft Skull Press, 2007) and Jane: A Murder (Soft Skull Press, 2005), which was a finalist for the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for the Art of the Memoir.

Nelson is the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in Nonfiction and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry, and she is currently at work on a nonfiction project supported by a Creative Capital Grant for Innovative Literature. She teaches on the BFA and MFA faculty of the School of Critical Studies at the California Institute of the Arts and lives in Los Angeles.
