Winifred Johnson Clive Foundation Distinguished Visiting Fellow for Interdisciplinary Painting Practices

Wendy White is critically hailed for work that expands the parameters of painting through the use of multiple canvases, sculptural additions, and site-specific installation. Frequently inspired by the visual cacophony of her neighborhood of Chinatown in New York City, her works contain dense accumulations of natural and synthetic materials, atmospheric color, digital and analogue marks, and fragments of text. Akin to the glut of advertising, graffiti, and signage that somehow coalesce to form iconic New York City vistas, White’s extension of pictorial space shifts the work from painting to object.

Wendy White has had solo exhibitions at Leo Koenig Inc., New York; Galería Moriarty, Madrid, Spain; Andrew Rafacz Gallery, Chicago; Van Horn, Düsseldorf, Germany; Maruani & Noirhomme, Brussels, Belgium; and University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. Her work is featured in Phaidon’s anthology Vitamin P2: New Perspectives in Painting, and was recently on view in After Hours 2: Murals on the Bowery, sponsored by the New Museum and Art Production Fund. In February 2014, White will be included in Fútbol: The Beautiful Game, curated by Franklin Sirmans at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
