Throughout his career, John Miller has pursued an ambitious and cross-disciplinary investigation into so-called middlebrow culture and artifice-laden consumer societies. His recent relief sculptures and installations feature gilded junk—found Styrofoam, plastic objects, and discarded wood tables overlaid with gold leaf. The works reference the decadence of our current moment and speak to the instability of cultural and economic excess. He has presented major exhibitions at Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany; Kunsthalle Zurich, Switzerland; Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius, Lithuania; MoMA PS1, New York; and has participated in the Whitney Biennials of 1985 and 1991. Miller will be a part of the forthcoming exhibition Take It or Leave It: Institution, Image, Ideology at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, in Spring 2014.
