Lecture: Allegories and Metaphors
Since the early 1970s, Paul Kos has challenged conventions of art media and subject matter. For a global audience, he staged new possibilities for artistic treatments of time, space, and cultural systems. His interests address basic relationships between the artist and the creative process. Included in this investigation are elementary dialogues between man and nature, and the individual and social constructs. Both joy and paradox are unearthed in his mining of the everyday.

Artist Bio
One of the founders of the Bay Area conceptual movement, Kos has exhibited internationally and is represented in major museum collections, including New York’s MoMA, the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, SFMOMA, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. He is a Professor Emeritus at SFAI, where he taught in the New Genres Department from 1978 to 2008. www.paulkos.net

About the Graduate Lecture Series
SFAI's Graduate Lecture Series (GLS) allows students to engage with emerging and established artists, curators, critics, and historians working in both local and global art communities. As an investigation of the contemporary issues relevant to students’ full education and experience, GLS gives the entire graduate body a common interdisciplinary foundation. It also plays a crucial role in defining individual praxis and the meanings of “success” within the current and future landscape of contemporary art. In addition, students have the opportunity to meet with some of the guests for individual critiques, small group colloquia, and informal gatherings after the lectures.

All GLS lectures begin at 4:30 pm on Fridays in the Lecture Hall on SFAI’s 800 Chestnut Street campus. For a complete schedule of SFAI's lectures and events, please visit www.sfai.edu/events
