Event Details

Section 1, Session 1: LED Circuits - on, off, fading, differences between analog and digital

This is a practical, hands-on, lightweight approach to learning electronics.  Participants will use an Arduino board in simple, single component circuits and program behaviors using models in the C programming language. They will implement logical instructions that create electrical responses and subsequent visual physical responses.

Level: Beginner

Ages: 10+

Equipment: Participants must bring their own laptops.  Students will have access to the SparkFun Inventors Kits during class as well as tools and test equipment. A personal Kit may be purchased at the end of class for an additional cost if desired.

Next Classes:
Session 2: Variable resistors
Session 3: Multiple LED projects and variations
Session 4: Servo and hobby motors

Instructor Bio: Trish Tsoiasue has a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and has spent over 30 years in technical positions including software development, quality assurance, system design, project management and system engineering.  This experience and her interests in all things creative, enables her to visualize learning paths that involve multiple media.  She operates at both high-tech and low-tech levels, and especially appreciates opportunities to interpret more complex ideas for young minds.  Amongst others, her class offerings range from LEGO make and take experiences, sewing softies with... or without...LEDs, exploring mechanical assemblies from a book written in 1904, and the SparkFun Inventors' kit.  Trish is a co-founder of Shared Science, an Engineering and Technology program for youth in grades K-12.

Trish strongly believes in the maker philosophy of learning through doing - creating the problem (and the inherent motivation) then finding the solution.

"Patricia Tsoiasue is a creative force with endless ideas for youngsters and our community. Her practical electronics sessions give kids the tools, the space and a starting place to tinker and figure out how things work without the class feeling like school. With materials such as conductive thread and paint, she turns the practical into the creative. As our 9-year-old says, “It’s just fun.” - Robyn, parent to Philip
