September Luncheon - MAPS 3 Update!

Join us to hear David Todd, Program Manager for the MAPS 3 and MAPS for Kids Programs, speak about progress on these city-wide improvement programs. MAPS 3 is a 10-year construction program designed to improve the quality of life in Oklahoma. The program is funded by a one-cent sales tax initiative that began in April 2010 and is projected to raise $777 to fund eight projects, including a streetcar system, senior wellness centers, a new convention center, state fairground improvements and a new downtown central park. Construction on the $700 million MAPS for Kids school improvement program is nearing completion on the work that began in 2002. Construction on several gyms, two stadiums and a new district administration building are scheduled for completion in the near term.
We will also hear from Cathy O’Connor, President and CEO of the Alliance for Economic Development of Oklahoma City, a non-profit corporation designed to coordinate public participation in economic development projects. Prior to becoming President of the Alliance in 2011, Ms. O’Connor served the City of Oklahoma City as an Assistant City Manager. Ms. O’Connor 30-year career with the City included stints as the City’s Capital Improvement Budget Officer, Budget Director and Finance Director. During her tenure, the City undertook an ambitious planning process to redevelop Core to Shore (750 acres of underutilized land between the core of downtown and the shore of the Oklahoma River). Ms. O’Connor served on the steering committee for this planning effort.

In September of 2001, a small group of A/E/C marketers met and quickly decided that an SMPS chapter in Oklahoma was desperately needed to help firms within the state join together to form stronger partnerships and also to offer training opportunities for its members. Within three months officers were elected, Articles of Incorporation were filed, and on December 11, 2001, Oklahoma was declared the 50th SMPS chapter in the nation.
