Self-Service BI with Excel and Power BI

This is a full day of intensive training designed to provide you with the required knowledge to design and create Business Intelligence solutions leveraging the latest version of Microsoft self-service BI tools: Power BI. You will learn how to use Power Query for Excel to explore, collect a combine data from heterogeneous sources and then how to create data models and calculations using in-memory analytics with Power Pivot for Excel. You will see how to create interactive data visualizations within Excel using Power View and Power Maps. Finally, we will look at Power BI deployment options into Office 365 and provide you with guidelines to make architectural and design decisions when building self-service BI solutions. 


Rafael Salas is a recognized speaker and published author with more than 15 years of experience in Business Intelligence and Information Architecture. He is the recipient of multiple industry recognitions, including the Microsoft MVP Award and The Data Warehouse Institute Best Practices Award. Rafael is also an active member of the SQL Server technical community and blogs regularly at www.rafael-salas.com.

Javier GuillenJavier Guillen is a Solutions Architect for BlueGranite, a Microsoft Gold Partner in Business Intelligence. An active blogger, speaker, and Microsoft community contributor, Javier is particularly interested in SQL Server Analysis Services technology, including Multidimensional and Tabular models, as well as the practical application of MDX and DAX patterns.





  • Make a business case for Self-Service BI and understand how it can fit into the overall BI landscape in your organization.
  • Learn how to use Power BI tools in Excel to extract, transform and combine data; 
  • Create models and calculations to support BI analytics and create interactive and rich data visualizations.
  • Understand Power BI deployment options to share and collaborate content.



  • There are no pre-requisites for this course
  • Attendees are not required to have Power BI but they are encouraged to bring their laptops with the required software installed if they want to follow examples and demos. Excel 2013 with Power Query, Power Pivot, Power View and Power maps. Excel 2010 can be used for Power Query and Power Pivot exercises.
