Seed Saving

Growing plants from seeds you’ve collected yourself is fun and saves money. In this class you will learn all you need to know for seed-saving success: what kinds of vegetables and flowers grow well from saved seeds, what will breed true and what will not, how to tell if the seeds are ripe, specific techniques for collecting and cleaning seeds, and how to store seeds for the longest survival. We will harvest some seed and clean it as part of the workshop.

Anders Vidstrand works as Science Technician and Adjunct Instructor at the Merritt College Landscape Horticulture Department, where he helps manage the 7 acres of gardens, the nursery for the biannual Plant Sales, class labs and where teaches Edible Landscaping. He has been gardening since he could walk, but has been practicing professionally for 6 years. His areas of interest include: heirloom varieties, unusual, rare and native plants, and eventually propagating and growing at least half of the some 20,000 plants known to be edible. He is a listed member of Seed Savers Exchange where he offers numerous unusual species and varieties to gardeners around the country.
