Mindshare Presents "Interstellar & The Science of Entertainment" at Cross Campus

What do Hollywood and the field of Science have in common? Not much, at least most of the time. But with easy access to information movie fans just might be getting smarter! These days, unless it's a story of pure fantasy, script writers face more criticism than ever when they gloss over the facts and attempt to get away with a plot that has no foundation in reality.

What is the history of Hollywood's relationship with academia? How have the two areas of human endeavor influenced each other? What new technologies, whether in the theater or in the lab, will be the next thing to shape the future of story telling? Lets see what happens when we mix together great minds from the world of entertainment, design & science!

WHEN 7pm-11pm, Tuesday, December 16th

WHERECross Campus - 929 Colorado Ave, Santa Monica

TICKETS $20 General Admission / $25 at the Door

Hollywood, Science & the Intersection of Fact & Fiction

Rick Loverd / @SciEntEx
Program Director at National Academy of Sciences Science & Entertainment Exchange

Some people out there feel that our media should be more than just brain chewing gum and that it should inform, teach and inspire us. While of course there is a place for fantasy and fiction, many feel that it's important to relay the facts as we tell stories. Well we're happy to say that Hollywood and academia are beginning to become more friendly with each other. Who knows, the next time you go to a movie, you might just learn a thing or two!

Rick Loverd is the director of The Science & Entertainment Exchange, a program of the National Academy of Sciences. The program's mission is to connect scientists, engineers and doctors with Hollywood writers, producers, directors and actors with the view of helping to ensure accurate portrayal of science in film, on television and in other entertainment outlets.

Heaven in a Wild Flower: Fractals and the Power of the Infinite

Anders Hjemdahl / @AndersHjemdahl
Creative Director, Technologist, Developer

To many the term fractal conjurs up the sort of trippy pictures you might find on a college dorm wall. But far more than just eye candy, fractal mathematics has emerged from the realm of mere troublesome theory and hit the mainstream, powering many real world applications such as games, films, models of weather, forest growth and stock market prices, biology and ecology, and applied in research on psychology and perception. As we delve into this mind bending area of research new possibilities open up for everything from technology to design to entertainment .

Anders Hjemdahl is a creative technologist who has worked with concept development for digital media since the early 1990s, with a special interest in innovative technology, interactivity and virtual experiences. In his spare time, he journeys far afield, exploring the infinite depths and recesses of fractal worlds, sometimes documenting his travels. Anders Hjemdahl’s fractal art has been featured in articles, events and exhibitions, and is represented in the “Swedish Design - 100 Years” encyclopedia. He is currently working on a photo book from his journeys through the Mandelbrot Set and a 3D fractal experience for VR platforms.

Hollywood’s Newest Stars: Black holes, dark matter, and warping wonders.

Kevin Peter Hickerson Ph.D. / @kphickerson
Postdoctoral Scholar, UCLA Physics B.S., M.S., Ph.D., Caltech

Hollywood blockbusters like InterstellarThor and Gravity are more and more using real science to paint a realistic backdrop for epic encounters with mythical and god-like cosmic forces. Indeed, modern physics is busy producing an all-star cast of heroes and villains like super-massive black holes, extra dimensions, wormholes, dark matter and time warps. Science fiction is barely able to keep up with the audience demand for, not just impossible fantasy, but exploring the limits of what is possible. It turns out the real Universe is so mysterious and fantastic; there is a lot of room to dream big.

Kevin is a Nuclear Physicist, Inventor, Entrepreneur, Public Speaker, Science Consultant, and Comedian. His ongoing research of the fundamental properties of matter, collaborating on the design, construction, and operation of neutrino and neutron physics experiments in Los Alamos, New Mexico and Gran Sasso, Italy. Kevin lectures around the globe. While mostly technical, he also gives publically accessible talks appropriate for outreach to general audiences, about important popular topics like Solar Power, the Higgs Boson, Dark Matter, Neutrinos and Science in Popular Fiction.
