Event Details

Science + Language Arts + Math = SLAM Workshop

Thursday, February 21 | 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. | Grades K - 5

Time devoted to teaching science is too often condensed, due to time constraints and resources diverted to developing reading and mathematics skills. This workshop showcases activities that can be used to deliver inquiry-based science and math content through the language arts. We lead participants on a language arts journey through different Museum exhibits, highlighting methods to infuse reading, writing, and speaking lessons with STEM content.

A brief discussion on planning effective field trips addresses creative ways to design a student visit. Our staff also provides an overview of the services and programs available in the Educator Resource Center in the Lyman Library, emphasizing support for teachers as learners.

Museum of Science

One of the world's largest science centers and Boston's most attended cultural institution, the Museum introduces about 1.5 million visitors a year to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) via dynamic programs and hundreds of interactive exhibits. Founded in 1830, the Museum was first to embrace all the sciences under one roof. Its 10,000-square-foot Hall of Human Life draws on the latest discoveries in the life sciences to engage visitors in their own biology and health. Other highlights include the Thomson Theater of Electricity, Charles Hayden Planetarium, Mugar Omni Theater, Gordon Current Science & Technology Center, Butterfly Garden and 4-D Theater. Reaching over 20,000 teens a year worldwide via the Intel Computer Clubhouse Network, the Museum also leads a 10-year, $41 million National Science Foundation-funded Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network of science museums. Its National Center for Technological Literacy®’s engineering curricula have reached an estimated 79,200 teachers and 6.9 million students nationwide. Visit mos.org.
