SCIENCE CAFE EVANSTON: Transforming Music

Transforming Music - A Science Cafe Evanston Special Event with Tod Machover
Tod Machover is a professor of Music and Media at the MIT Media Lab and Director of the Lab's Hyperinstruments and Opera of the Future Groups. He is widely celebrated for inventing new technology for instruments. His music has been acclaimed for breaking traditional artistic and cultural boundaries, offering a unique and innovative synthesis of acoustic and electronic sound, of symphony orchestras and interactive computers, and of operatic arias and rock songs.
This special Science Cafe Evanston will focus on how music exerts a powerful force over our minds and bodies, engaging us at least as fully as any other human activity. Yet, due to perceived lack of talent or expertise, many are excluded from performing or creating music themselves. Tod will describe how the doors to musical expression are being opened by new tools and technologies, from virtuosity simulators like Guitar Hero to medical devices that use music for rehabilitation to animate operas, and how excellence and everyday experience can be combined through musical expression.
