Johns Hopkins University Scholarly Publishing Symposium

On November 9th, John Hopkins University and Elsevier will offer the Johns Hopkins research community a Scholarly Publishing Symposium. The symposium will feature multiple sessions designed to provide a better understanding of scholarly publishing, including insight into how to better position your papers for acceptance. Elsevier publishers will lead the sessions with support from Johns Hopkins faculty editors. The sessions will underscore the distinct perspectives, experiences and recommendations from experts within the publishing industry and those who serve as reviewers in their fields of study.

Sessions will include a Scholarly Publishing panel discussion, a seminar outlining topics and trends affecting Scholarly Publishing and Higher Education; and publishing break-out sessions, aligned with disciplinary concentrations.

Attendees are welcome to join any or all of the sessions. When you register you will have the option to sign up for the entire day or for individual sessions. Registration is critical as some sessions have limited availabilty and we need to plan lunch in a fiscal and resource effective manner. PLEASE REGISTER

Panelists: Elsevier Publishers with commentary by Johns Hopkins faculty editors

The panel discussion will provide an overview of the scholarly publishing process, including best practices to get your paper published. The following topics will be addressed.

Overview of the scholarly publishing landscape
How best to structure a manuscript for submission
Targeting the “right” journal for submission
Overview of the editorial process (Submission to Acceptance/Rejection)
Responding to reviewer comments
Publishing ethics
Promoting your research

This presentation will provide an overview of the scholarly publishing landscape including an examination of several associated topics and trends affecting the higher education and its associated stakeholders from institutional administration to early career researchers. Targeted topics to include but not limited to:

Promoting One’s Work
Reproducibility
Publishing Ethics
Predatory Publishing

The above session is open to all, but will be tailored towards a faculty and administration audience.

These sessions will feature scholarly publishing insight and direction tailored to align with targeted concentrations. An Elsevier publisher with a focus in the targeted areas will lead each of the hands-on sessions. The publisher will provide an overview of the publishing landscape within the concentration, including an overview of the “hottest” research topics and trends that lead to publication. This will include an examination of the differences in the publishing processes across journals and disciplines, e.g. varying timelines and processes, such as the importance of engineers publishing their conference proceedings as opposed to submitting traditional journal articles. Elsevier and Johns Hopkins organizers will work to confirm a corresponding faculty representative to join each session.
