SCBWI BRAZOS VALLEY PINEY WOODS RETREAT
Monday, October 21, 2013 at 1:00 PM - Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at 12:30 AM (CDT)
Every year SCBWI Brazos Valley offers a unique event to help Texas children's content creators achieve their goals. This year we are offering a Fall Retreat at Lakeview Methodist Conference Center located in the East Texas Piney Woods near Palestine. This event is for working writers and illustrators who need time, space and encouragement to move forward with their works in progress.
For Writers: Each attendee will be placed into a group with an experienced writer who will facillitate the group of up to 5 participants. This is a real world writing experience, a chance to work through the give-and-take needed to create viable works. Everyone, including the most experienced writer, needs input, so facillitators will also be participating in the groups.
Participants will be expected to read manuscripts ahead of time and prepare whatever notes and suggestions are appropriate in a kind, encouraging, and helpful manner. During the first session groups will discuss each manuscript. The second session will focus on sharing rewrites for pb authors and revision game plans for novelists.
Writers also may attend the Illustrator 101 session to learn more about picture books and what it means to “leave room for the illustrator” in a manuscript.
For Illustrators: Diandra Mae, illustrator coordinator for SCBWI Houston, will facilitate the illustrators’ small group with one critique session based on a prompt she will provide and another session for portfolio review. On Saturday afternoon she will offer Illustator 101—a session on the basics of picture book illustration—which will be open to writers as well.
The rest of the day-time hours will be for work. Quiet hours will be enforced.
In the evenings, particpants are welcome to work or join in a time to network. An open-read opportunity will also be scheduled.
Participants will receive Room and Board (6 meals) at the retreat. Let us know if you have special dietary concerns. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop/tablet--and a printer if desired. Wifi will be available.
Space is limited to 25 participants. Single and Double rooms are available for this event.
