SCA ConSERVE NYC: May Service Event at Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn
Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM (EDT)
Join the Student Conservation Association for our May ConSERVE NYC event at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn!
Floyd Bennett Field was opened as New York City's first municipal airport in 1931. Throughout the 1930s it was the launch site of many historic flights, included those piloted by Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh. In 1972, Floyd Bennett Field became a part of Gateway National Recreation Area, and is now managed by the National Park Service as a museum and park space incorporating a campground, a community garden, and numerous trails along the waterfront of Jamaica Bay.
During Hurricane Sandy, much of Floyd Bennett Field was flooded, and storm debris still remains along the trails and beachfront. Volunteers will be clearing the trails and removing litter and debris from the beach.
