In honor of July National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, Black Girls Smile Inc. will be hosting our inaugural "Saving Us" Mental Wellness Brunch to facilitate an open dialogue on mental wellness within the black community.
Suicide is now the third leading cause of death among young African Americans in the United States, making this conversation both timely and imperative. The recent highly publicized deaths by suicide of Yusuf Neville (distinguished Hampton alumnus), Josh Marks (TLC’s MasterChef Runner-Up) and Karyn Washington (Founder of For Brown Girls), prove there is hard work to be done to promote mental wellness and de-stigmatize the act of seeking professional help for mental health difficulties among young African-Americans.
Through this interactive educational experience, participants will gain knowledge on warning signs for mental health difficulties, how to assist someone in need, accessing available resources, and most importantly how to maintain positive mental wellness. The goal is that participants leave with an invaluable network of peer professionals who are passionate about changing the trajectory of mental health awareness in the African American community.
I truly hope you will join us Saturday July 26th in a positive day of healing.
