Frieze Projects East artist Sarnath Banerjee discusses his commission and wider practice with Frieze Curator Sarah McCrory.
Sarnath Banerjee’s bold graphic works centre on universal themes, common experience and his Indian background and culture. Anecdotal and autobiographical in nature, his stories are imbued with humour and immediacy. They follow a main protagonist (often the artist himself) as he navigates his way through everyday scenarios and stories; be it the plight of a car salesman, or the decisions of a political think tank.
Sarnath Banerjee (b.1972) is an Indian artist based in New Delhi and Berlin. Recent solo shows include: ‘Psychic Plumber and Other Conjectures’, Blue Frog Studios in association with Project 88, Mumbai and ‘Solo Presentation’, FIAC, Paris (both 2011). Recent group shows include: ‘Indian Highway 5’, MAXXI, Rome; ‘Paris – Delhi – Bombay’, Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the Prague Biennale (all 2011). His third book ‘Harappa Files’ was published by Harper Collins and Project 88 in January 2011.
This event has been organised in collaboration with Bow Arts.
