Part of the Program for Jewish Civilization's Spring 2014 Lecture Series.
This talk will take on the notion that Jewish humor is solely a product of "cultural Judaism" and doesn't have anything to do with traditional Jewish Practices. By looking at both historical and contemporary examples of Jewish humor it will attempt to refute this criticism and offer and alternative understanding for the origins and function of humorous material as well as thinking about some of the reasons why we find it funny in the first place.
Professor Jennifer Caplan is Visiting Assistant Professor of Religion at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.
A light lunch will be served. RSVP is requested.
