Event Details

Goose Island Beer Founder and CEO John Hall graduated with a MBA from the University of Iowa in 1966 and will return to campus on Thursday, October 13 to talk with students and the general public about his experience. Hall's talk is part of the Sandage Entrepreneurial Speaker Series, hosted by the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center.

Come at 5PM for the lecture in room W151 of the Pappajohn Business Building and join Hall in room W401 afterward for a reception featuring Goose Island’s products. Reception tickets are $5 and include appetizers with a cash bar available.

John HallHall founded the Chicago-based Goose Island Beer Company in 1986 after reading a Delta Magazine article about boutique beers. He determined the time was right to launch a craft beer and did so in his hometown. Hall provided visitors with the opportunity to watch the brewing process while enjoying a number of distinctive beers. The Goose Island Brewpub opened in 1988 and its success prompted Hall to open a larger brewery and bottling plant to keep up with demand. In addition to its original brewpub, Goose Island opened a second near Wrigley Field.

A 2006 agreement between Goose Island and Anheuser-Busch provided the company with wider distribution. This enabled the company to expand its geographic reach while staying true to its craft brewing roots.

This spring, it was announced that AnheuserBusch would purchase Goose Island Beer Company in a deal totaling $38.8 million. As part of the agreement, production of Goose Island beers would continue in Chicago with AnheuserBusch investing heavily in the company’s manufacturing capacity. The two Chicago brewpubs are not a part of the agreement but will continue to operate as they have. Hall will remain as CEO and will continue to be responsible for production and expansion. AnheuserBusch is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev, a leading global brewer.

Today, Goose Island continues to brew an innovative selection of craft beers. Goose Island is acclaimed for creating world-class ales including 312 Urban Wheat Ale, Honker’s Ale, India Pale Ale, Matilda, Pere Jacques, Sofie, and a wide variety of seasonal, draft-only and barrel-aged releases including Bourbon County Brand Stout, the original bourbon barrel-aged beer. Goose Island beers are now enjoyed in 26 states and Europe. More information is available at
