True West winds in and out, doubles back on itself,
and mystically investigates not only the problems of our
society, but raises even more questions about how we
define ourselves, our success, our history.
Set in a 1980 retirement home, TRUE WEST links an
absent mother with an even more absent father, and
the resultant writer-son is attempting redemption
through the penning of a classic Western screenplay.
But something is amiss, the rules we live by are broken,
and the words won’t come. Two brothers--one who
follows every rule and another who doesn’t recognize
any of them—now align for a fight to the death. But
which is right and which is wrong? It’s hard to tell the
difference between the good, the bad and the ugly
when all look exactly the same.
Set in the FBC with classic Western movies setting
the stage, the show simultaneously howls with the
dismay of broken dreams and growls with the pessi-
Austin: I am taking off with Lee.
Mom: You gonna go live with your father?
Austin: No, we’re going to a different desert Mom.
Mom: I see. Well, you’ll probably wind up on the
same desert sooner or later.
And so the struggle for a new American identity,
connection and meaning winds on.
