Tarpon CSI: Citizens and Scientists Investigating Tarpon

Join us for kickoff of the 2nd year of the Marine Science Speaker series at Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center.  The spring 2013 series will be held on the 1st Thursday of March, April, and May.

Come and learn some of the recent findings from the Tarpon Genetic Recapture Study based on forensic techniques being applied to thousands of tarpon DNA samples. Volunteer anglers from Tampa Bay and beyond are responsible for these samples – aka clues – that are helping to unravel some of the remaining tarpon life history mysteries. Topics will include a review of known tarpon life history, how the current study got started, and how YOU can get involved.

Kathy Guindon has been in Florida for nearly 18 years studying its fish and fisheries, the last 10 of which have been spent observing and researching Atlantic tarpon. Projects focused on learning the effects of catch-and-release angling on tarpon survival, movement, and stress responses using ultrasonic telemetry, physiology and genetics. Guindon is a recent Ph.D. graduate from the University of South Florida’s College of Marine Science and works full time as Assistant Research Scientist for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute.

Her research and knowledge on tarpon life history and biology has been sought out for assistance in production of and has been featured on various television shows appearing on the Sportsman Channel, Outdoor Channel, Discovery Channel, National Geographic TV, Mark Sosin’s Saltwater Journal, and the World Fishing Network; and in written media such as Guy Harvey Magazine, Sport Fishing Magazine, Florida Sportsman, The Tampa Bay Times and Miami Herald to name a few.

We are happy to host the series at Weedon Island Cultural and Natural History Center at 1800 Weedon Drive NE, St Petersburg, FL 33702, with refreshments donated from the Friends of Weedon Island (http://fowi.org).
