Sea Turtle Migrations

Join us for "Salty Topics", Pinellas County Sea Grant Extension sponsored Marine Science Speaker series at Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center.

Sea turtles are renowned for their reproductive migrations -- the travels that adults make from feeding grounds to nesting beaches.  However, developmental migrations, those that take place before the animal matures, may be even more remarkable.  Smaller animals cover greater distances and after decades eventually rejoin their reproductive population.  Developmental migrations will be described and discussed in light of research programs in Bermuda and Panama and the relevant literature.

Dr. Peter Meylan is R.R. Hallin Professor of Natural Sciences at Eckerd College, where he is happily housed in the brand new James Center for Molecular and Life Sciences.  With his wife, Dr. Anne Meylan (Florida Wildlife Research Institute, FWC, St. Pete), he has studied sea turtles in the field for more than 30 years.  Other research interests include the herpetology of Florida, turtle phylogeny, and the biology and conservation of Florida turtles.

We are happy to host the series at Weedon Island Cultural and Natural History Center at 1800 Weedon Drive NE, St Petersburg, FL 33702, with refreshments donated from the Friends of Weedon Island (http://fowi.org).
