Salty Shakespeare: Hamlet - Wednesday 7/11 WAITLIST OPEN
Wednesday, July 11, 2012 from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM (PDT)
3:30pm Preshow on the Plaza with Salty Too
4-5:30pm Hamlet Performance in the Guest House Garden
Salty Shakespeare concludes their residency with a run of their new adaptation of Shakespeare's classic tale of murder, indecision and intrigue. This event takes place outside; bring layers and sun protection. Please arrive between 3-3:30pm to secure your seat - late seating may not be available.
The Salty Shakespeare Company, headed by director Nancy Linehan Charles, is the Theater Ensemble in Residence June 4 - July 20 at the Marion Davies Guest House. During their tenure they are rehearsing and developing a brand new, much shortened version of Hamlet. They bring their sense of immediacy, physicality and play to their Beach House residency, which began June 4 and continues through seven performances July 10-20. The Residents will be blogging at beachhouseair.blogspot.com – follow the blog for updates. All rehearsals are open to the public; dates posted on the blog; tweeting and facebooking during all their events are encouraged.
Believing that the mission of art is to disturb the peace, Salty Shakespeare is dedicated to wiping the cobwebs off museum-piece theatrical productions and bringing Shakespeare directly to the streets. The world of the groundlings (the cheap seats!) becomes their home base – and clowning, acrobatics, and percussion are all mixed with vibrant language and the immediacy of no-barriers acting to electrify and attract the passing crowd. Salty has now "dropped scenes" all across L.A.; Hamlet and Horatio discussed the Ghost on the ramparts in a downtown office elevator; Romeo and Juliet reached for each other from a balcony and a mezzanine in a public mall; Macbeth and Macduff faced off with a ferocious balloon sword fight. The Salties have almost been arrested twice but nothing deters this brave guerrilla troupe! “Turning Shakespeare on his ear since 2010 for a smartphone-enabled generation.” saltyshakespeare.org
