Beach=Culture is proud to introduce Ana Maria Alvarez, our 2014 Choreographer-in-Residence. She begins her residency in September but can be seen onsite doing preparation work in July and August with her company, CONTRA-TIEMPO. Tonight CONTRA-TIEMPO teaching artists and company members Cesar Garfiaz and Bianca Blanco lead a short workshop in salsa rueda de casino, a group salsa dance in the round. Salsa is a dance form that is rooted in Cuban and Puerto Rican cultural tradition, an improvisational form that is created and recreated with every new combination of dancers. Old and young, beginners and experts all can dance salsa! Rueda is a Cuban form of Salsa danced in a circle with a caller and frequent partner switching (similar to square dancing). It is a powerful tool that the company uses to teach concepts of 'compassionate partnering' which are core to the artistic work of CONTRA-TIEMPO. Participants will learn footwork, turns and partnering techniques that they will be able to take and apply on any dance floor in LA. Please come prepared to move wearing comfortable shoes. This workshop will have limited seating and participation is encouraged.
We look forward to welcoming Ana Maria Alvarez and her company CONTRA-TIEMPO, presenting her newest project, 'Agua Furioso,' in residence September 2-14, 2014. This new work combines public inquiry within the dance performance, and deals with water’s connection to family, migration, scarcity and abundance. Free Community Choreographic Laboratories, that will mix dance performance and public inquiry, will be presented on Friday-Sunday September 12-14. Please check back for times and to RSVP.
CONTRA-TIEMPO, a bold and multilingual Los Angeles based dance company, is dedicated to transforming the world through dance. Founded and directed by Ana Maria Alvarez in 2005, their unique form of Urban Latin Dance Theater brings to life voices that are not traditionally heard on the concert stage, while building community, facilitating dialogue, and moving audiences to imagine what is possible. http://contra-tiempo.org
