“Mean To Be Free” is a live stage play that leads the audience through the experience of runaway slaves led by Harriet Tubman. This production captures the emotion and faith of the African American ancestor. “Mean to Be Free” is the second production in the Off the Page, On the Stage Series with student matinees on January 31st & February 1st, 2013 at 10:00am. The tickets prices are: $5 for student matinee (including one free adult per 15 students); $20 for premium seating; and $16 for general seating.
“Mean To Be Free” was first produced at Hunter College Playhouse in New York City, under the auspices of Hunter College High School by the Junior Theatre Club on June 18, 1968. “Mean To Be Free” is based on the historical records of the escape of runaway slaves kept by William Still of Philadelphia and published in 1872 under the title of The Underground Railroad and on the biography of Harriet Tubman Harriet, the Moses of Her People, written in 1886 by Sarah Elizabeth Bradford.
Mean to Be Free by Joanna H. Kraus is based on historical accounts of American History and is a story of two black children who traveled the dangerous Underground Railroad north to freedom. Recounting situations that test their courage, determination and strength of spirit, Mean to Be Free illuminates aspects of African American contributions to our American Heritage
