What is a RootsCamp?
RootsCamp isn’t your everyday gathering; it’s an “unconference.” Instead of pre-set powerpoints and “expert” panels, participants design sessions and decide the program. The idea is to bring together progressives of all stripes as equals, and have an honest exchange of ideas. When we learn from one another, we take away new ideas, make new connections, and strengthen our work.

In the past, participants have come from all over the country, and even around the globe. We’ve had senior staff from national campaigns conversing with first time organizers from a local ballot initiative, and labor organizers from Wisconsin trading battle stories with labor organizers from Dublin.

It’s also a rare opportunity for D.C. insiders to interact directly with people fighting on the front lines, and a unique space to begin an honest discussion about what worked, what didn’t, and how we grow stronger together.

What’s My Role?
Your perspective is unique. Whether you develop and lead a session, or simply participate in the conversation, we hope you’ll come and share your experiences, knowledge and skills. You won’t just be networking and attending discussions: you’ll be helping define our work over the coming years by sharing the lessons you learned this year.

Want to be a help bring as many as possible to RootsCamp? So do we.
We believe that cost should not be a barrier to participation, so we keep the registration fee as low as possible for RootsCamp. But there are real costs involved in hosting such an engaging and dynamic event. If you'd like to learn more about how you can sponsor bringing other organizers to the event, meals, electricity, A/V or something else, please contact Jamie McGonnigal at
Why did the price go up from the last RootsCamp?
We're constantly trying to improve things here at NOI and because of that and because we're expecting up to 2500 of you, we're using the Washington Convention Center. The Convention Center is in a central part of town with tons of food and lodging options in the immediate area. Unfortunately, it's a lot more expensive than a lot of our previous RootsCamp locations.
REMINDER! This year's RootsCamp will take place on Novermber 30th and December 1st, 2012. This is a FRIDAY & SATURDAY (not the usual Saturday/Sunday).
**Unfortunately, due to budgeting and limitations, we cannot offer refunds. If you cannot join us and have already purchased a registration, you may either donate that registration to a Rootscamper who otherwise could not afford to come, or email us at to let us know if you'd like to change the name on your reservation.
