The Rising Tide Conference is an annual gathering for everyone who loves New Orleans. Leveraging the power of bloggers and new media, the conference is a launch pad for organization and action. Our day-long program of speakers and presentations is tailored to inform, entertain, engage and inspire.
We come together to dispel myths, promote facts, highlight progress and regress, discuss ideas, and promote sound policies at all levels. We aim to be a "real life" demonstration of internet activism. The program schedule and details can be found on the Schedule page of our website.
Scholar, commentator and activist Dr. Andre Perry will deliver this year's Keynote Address. He is the Founding Dean of the College of Urban Education at Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Before taking this position, he was the Associate Director for Educational Initiatives for the Loyola Institute for Quality and Equality in Education. From his website: "His research and teaching interests are college access and retention, charter schools and immigrant educational rights. In 2011 UNO Press released his book The Garden Path: The Miseducation of the City. Perry used non-fiction narratives to illustrate the real life tensions involved in post-Katrina education reform in New Orleans."
The Main Stage panel presentations include Using Mobile Devices to Uncover Seemingly Lost Historical Memory of the Confederacy, Leprosy, and White Supremacy in New Orleans, which features online and mobile tours that reveal ignored or misrepresented stories of Louisiana's past; Building Capacity in Marginalized Communities, methods that address or respond to circumstances and events that produce negative consquences within those communities; Saga at Treme: The Story of How A Quest for Personal Resilience Exposed Incompetence and Waste in Government; and Religion in Post-Katrina New Orleans, a conversation among representatives from diverse faith/spiritual communities over how such communities have been instrumental in the recovery of people's spiritual health and emotional/psychological well-being since the flooding of New Orleans in 2005.
In addition to our main conference stage, Rising Tide will again offer Tech School, a second stage of panels devoted to hands-on, how-to style social media and blogging topics on the latest in web strategies and online tools. We'll have breakfast beverages and pastries to get you going in the morning and lunch will be available. This year the conference and lunch tickets are separate.
Participants are encouraged to blog, post on Facebook and Twitter and otherwise connect and share with others in attendance and around the world (#RT9). The goals of Rising Tide are numerous, but are briefly: We seek to protect and preserve the cultural qualities of New Orleans that make our city unique. We resolve to root out and expose the corruption and incompetence that harms us all. We work to enact a vision of a restored and resilient community that respects traditions and reaches for a sustainable future for all citizens.
