Join the students and faculty of The City College of New York as they rise, strike, and dance in the name of freedom and equality. The event will be held in the Ballroom of the North Academic Center (NAC) at CCNY on February 14th, 2013. It will be held as a symbol of solidarity among women and their allies. One in three women and girls will be raped, beaten, or in some way sexually abused during their lifetimes. When brought to the global scale that number equals ONE BILLION WOMEN. ONE BILLION mothers, sisters, daughters, lovers, friends, cousins, and coworkers. ONE BILLION human beings with ONE BILLION beating hearts. This is a haunting and unacceptable number. Eve Ensler, inspiring playwright and activist, has put together this event One Billion Rising as a global strike to let the world see what it looks like and feels like to have these ONE BILLION women come together and RISE! As Eve puts it, "One billion women violated is an atrocity. One billion women DANCING is a REVOLUTION."
Join the REVOLUTION at The City College of New York and become a part of the solution! Tickets will be $6.50 and all the proceeds will go to CONNECT NYC. CONNECT is dedicated to the prevention of domestic violence/intimate partner violence, on an individual, communal, and systematic level. To learn more about CONNECT NYC, visit the website at: http://www.connectnyc.org/. By donating to CONNECT, we hope to help create a safer environment within our own community. While Eve Ensler is working on a global level, we are joining her and working to better the local. The personal is the political and the political is the personal!
When & Where
Megan O'Donnell is a Junior studying English with a concentration in creative writing at The City College of New York. This movement is extremely important to her because she sees how violence towards women has torn apart so many lives and has left so many people vulnerable, afraid, emotionally traumatized, or has taken their lives away all together. One billion is one billion too many. No woman, girl, boy, or man should have to suffer through abuse of any kind. She is with Eve Ensler 100%. It's not about reducing the violence, it's about putting a complete stop to it!
