Rifle Shooting Merit Badge
Tuesday, April 9, 2013 from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM (EDT)
Williamson Chapel Dining room, Mooresville, NC
RIFLE SHOOTING MERIT BADGE are being offered to Scouts of ALL ranks.
This merit badge will introduce scouts to rifle shooting and by attending this session and a subsequent field trip to a range, will complete the requirements needed for the merit badge. This session is to cover the written parts required for the merit badge. This is a fun and informative merit badge and counts as an “elective” merit badges towards rank advancement. We have secured enough ammunition to bring all the scouts to the outdoor range with the help of Mr. Childs and Mr. Nagy. Therefore, a separate trip will be lined up at the FOP range located at exit 45 on 77 to complete the shooting requirements of this badge in either April or Early May. The actual shooting requirements are listed below but should be relatively easy for any and all scouts as scopes are permitted and it is only 17 yards. For those unfamiliar with shooting, a 22 rifle has no “kick” and is ideal for a child of any age to shoot with adult supervision of course.
Shooting requirements below:
1) Using a .22 caliber rim fire rifle and shooting from a bench rest or supported prone position at 50 feet, fire five groups (three shots per group) that can be covered by a quarter. Using these targets, explain how to adjust sights to zero.
2) Adjust sights to center the group on the target and fire five groups (five shots per group). According to the target used, each shot in the group must meet the following minimum score: (1) A-32 targets - 9; (2) A-17 or TQ-1 targets - 7; (3) A-36 targets – 5
* Note: It is not always practical to adjust the sights (i.e. when using a borrowed fixed-sight rifle). For requirement 2, you may demonstrate your ability to use the shooting fundamentals by shooting five shot groups (five shots per group) in which all shots can be covered by or touch a quarter and then explain how to adjust the sights to zero the rifle.
Once I have dates secured for the shooting field trip associated with this merit badge, I will have a separate EventBrite signup with all the details and associated costs but it should be $10 or less per scout. If anyone has questions, please contact me, David Hartman, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 704-682-4664. Sorry but space is limited due to safety concerns so first come first serve. Additional scouts once filled will need to wait until the next time this is offered.
