ABOUT LNY & PROTOCOL
LNY (Lunar New Year) is an artist and interloper based in Newark, New Jersey. His work is ephemeral, location sensitive and takes the form of murals, drawings on paper and urban interventions. His practice is akin to graphic journalism as he both visualizes local narratives and reflects issues affecting the communities that his art inhabits.
Psychogeographies, politics, struggle, ethnicity and extreme emotion are all present in his work and are often expressed through a heavy use of vernacular symbolism, portraits of local residents and the creation of animal hybrids.
P R O T O C O L is an eight week residency at Solo(s) Project House that aims to question both the monetary and creative process working in public space. For this project the artist will create a limited edition print that will only be released once one hundred backers commit to it’s production. The money collected will in turn be used to create public art in and around Newark. During this time the gallery will serve as an open studio, an evolving installation, a meeting place for workshops, screenings, readings and a market place where the private art is released only after it has funded the creation of free public art. This open laboratory welcomes your participation and experimentation along with the artist.
P R O T O C O L takes inspiration from the Street Performer Protocol: an e-commerce mechanism that facilitates the creation of public works by collecting donations which are held by a third party and only released once the aimed amount is reached. The work created is then put in the public domain.
