The Middle East Center's (MEC) mission involves raising awareness of the unique circumstances of the region through research and instructional programs. The MEC has adopted an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the Middle East, and we offer a wide range of educational opportunities.
**Rescheduled** Teacher Workshop: Muslims and Islam in the United States

The focus of this workshop will be on Islam and Muslims in America. With immigration from the Middle East, the Horn of Africa, West Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, and growth of the Muslim African-American community in the greater Philadelphia region; the number of students in diverse religious community in growing. This workshop will give educators knowledge and tools for teaching about this community in their classrooms. Space is very limited and the first 20 registrants will be accepted (with others place on a waiting list). This workshop will be best suited for educators in Middle & High Schools. Teaching materials will be provided to those that attend. *This workshop is free of cost!*
This workshop will be lead by Colleen Daley and Rabia Mehboob from the Intercultural Communication program at University of Pennsyvlania's Graduate School of Education. Colleen is a former Peace Corps volunteer with a strong passion for social justice, youth, languages, and religious and cross-cultural dialogue. Rabia is currently working with the University of Pennsylvania at Penn Children's Center as a toddler teacher, and pursuing a Master's from the Graduate School of Education in the Intercultural Communication program. As a muslim that has grown in America she is familiar, with the issues Muslim students have while in school. She attended Temple University and graduated with a degree in early and elementary education, and is a certified teacher for grades K-6.
As part of our ongoing effort to expand your curriculum on the Middle East & North Africa. The Middle East Center will host more workshops throughout the school year for educators. Teachers that attend 3 or more of these workshops will receive a certificate from the Middle East Center at the Univesity of Pennsylvania.
