While large scale hydroelectric power stations are common in Pennsylvania and PA geography lends itself to the potential for hydro power in many locations, few micro-hydro systems are currently in use. For farms and residents along waterways with enough elevation change and flow ("resource"), a hydro system can be a reliable, low-cost energy solution. These micro-sized systems can provide anywhere from 1 to 100 kW of power.
This Field Day is geared toward helping agricultural producers, landowners and small businesses determine if a small hydro electric generating project may be feasible for their operations. Attendees will learn about the resource, technology, pros/cons and financial aspects of micro-hydro. We will then delve deeper into site assessment, sizing, equipment, installation, choosing an installer, environmental considerations, permitting and safety. Both lecture and hands-on sessions will be built into the day's event.

About the Venue & Presenter.
Whispering Creek is corporate retreat center that produces twice the energy it needs through energy efficiency, a geothermal heat pump, a vertical axis wind turbine, a solar array and biodiesel. The center has done a feasibility study for a micro-hydro project (no project implemented as yet), which we will explore as part of our workshop sessions. Presenter Rob Honders is a retired electronics engineer, educator, businessman and builder of micro hydro installations.
