PRAL Nola Presents: Updates from The Times-Picayune and NOLA Media Group
In May 2012, the city of New Orleans received news that The Times-Picayune, the daily paper for the Greater New Orleans Area and beyond for over 175 years, was going to reduce its daily publication to three days a week. The change in distribution made New Orleans the largest city in the country without a daily paper. As more and more consumers turn to the Internet for their news, however, the ownership group for the paper recognized the declining newspaper trend and saw this as an opportunity to grow Nola.com and launch a more digitally-focused company, NOLA Media Group. Over the past two years, we've seen a multitude of changes with the operations and staff at The Times-Picayune. On Tuesday, March 18, we'll hear from Ricky Mathews, the president of NOLA Media Group and publisher of The Times-Picayune, along with several other staff members about the past, present and future state of the paper and Nola.com.
About Ricky Mathews
Before launching NOLA Media Group and becoming the publisher of The Times-Picayune, Mathews was the publisher of the Mobile Press-Register and president of Advance Alabama and Mississippi who also oversees The Birmingham News, The Hunstville Times and The Mississippi Press. Prior to this, he was publisher of The Sun Herald in Biloxi. He has more than 30 years of experience in the newspaper industry and was instrumental in leading some of the recovery efforts for the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
