Event Details

Three modern classics will be featured in Liberating the Soul, a concert Redwood Symphony will present at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Canada College Main Theatre, 4200 Farm Hill Blvd., Redwood City.

Directed by Dr. Eric Kujawsky, the symphony will perform Jennifer Higdon’s Blue Cathedral, Lou Harrison’s Piano Concerto and John Corigliano’s Symphony No. 1. Pianist Louise Costigan-Kerns will be the soloist in the Harrison concerto.

The oldest piece on the program is Harrision’s engaging Piano Concerto from 1985. The concert is centered around John Corigliano’s Symphony No. 1, written at the peak of the AIDS crisis in 1989. This piece is an enduring memorial, mixing expressive rage with melodies offering solace.  (It is a programming coincidence, entirely appropriate, that all the composers on this program are gay or lesbian.) Higdon’s Blue Cathedral is the radiant balance to the program.  Written in 2000, it is as much of a hit as an orchestra piece can be, having been played by 400 orchestras around the world.

Tickets are $20 purchased ahead of time or $25 at the door; students are $10, and children 17 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. For tickets and further information, go to http://www.redwoodsymphony.org or call 650-366-6872.
