What is Active Learning?

“Active learning” describes a form of instruction using student-student and student-teacher collaboration, increased information access, non-traditional forms of student assessment and updated instructional delivery.

What is an Active Learning Environment?

An active learning environment might have round tables that seat four to nine students, each with their own network port and power supply, a teaching station at the center of the classroom and interactive whiteboards within reach of both students and the instructor. Research shows that when instructors adapt their pedagogical approach to new spaces by intentionally incorporating these techniques, student learning improves.

How is CWRU involved in the Active Learning movement?

Professors at CWRU are already exploring active learning in their own classrooms by “flipping” their lessons. ITS and Campus Planning and Facilities Management are teaming with leading learning space design firm The Sextant Group to explore how active learning can be promoted and encouraged by redesigning spaces in the CWRU campus environment. Up to four showcase rooms will be transformed and ready for faculty and students to use in the fall semester.
