Heifer International School Programs
Read to Feed is a unique reading incentive service-learning program that integrates global education into core instruction while building reading skills and a desire to help others in elementary-age children. As they learn about the world and their place in it, students become passionate about taking action, and use reading as a vehicle to enact real change. Children, individually or as a group, ask friends and family members to sponsor them for each book, page, or unit of time they read during a time frame set by their Read to Feed leader. At the end of the program, the group pools its funds and donates them to Heifer International to help millions of people around the world feed their families and reach self-reliance through the gifts of livestock and training. For 20 years, educators around the United States, South Africa, Hong Kong, Zambia have used Read to Feed as a way to increase students’ enthusiasm for reading and passion for making the world a better place.
