Event Details

This two-hour workshop plans to be a fast-paced and is meant for hobbyists, tinkerers, software developers, and hardware enthusiasts. We aim to provide you with the quickest ways of getting up-and-running on a Raspberry Pi, so that you can get started on the projects of your choice. We'll also put together a number of common projects to try out to place you beyond the beginner stage (hence the name "Intro+")

Attendees with little or no skill level on the Linux command line are welcome, though, encouraged to join the complimentary, 45-minute “Linux Basics” session beforehand. Young adults are welcome to join, if accompanied by an adult. Several Raspberry Pi devices and peripherals will be provided, however, BYOP (bring your own Pi) is highly encouraged. We will also have available for purchase a kit that includes the Raspberry Pi, a 3D printed case and several useful peripherals.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Get up-and-running quickly on your Raspberry Pi.

    • Components for a typical setup -- Power USB Cable, HDMI/SSH, Wifi/RJ45, USB-Preinstall before bootup

  • Troubleshooting your starter setup (common issues like incorrectly formatting the SD card, network/WiFi troubleshooting, incompatible USB dongles, and more).

    • Not formatting the SD Card

    • Common ways to install the image

    • Why USB dongles are not recommended

    • Proper Power Requirement

  • Fun games, apps, and sites to tinker with as a starting point.

  • Now let's make this thing useful! Common projects to pique your curiosity and side projects. Samples may include:

    • LED Blink Patterns (starter challenge)

    • Basic sensor data sampling, such as GPS and environmental data

    • MineCraft Game on Raspberry Pi (advanced challenge)

  • Q&A and tinker time

Young adult and senior citizen discounts available, please inquire! A Raspberry Pi device costs an additional $35 and peripheral costs vary.
