Event Details

Event Details

A weekend event where teams are provided a Raspberry Pi computer to turn into a fun or useful device with a clear and functional purpose.  Builders can bring their own electronics, rummage through the LVL1 bone yard, or integrate other components provided by our sponsors such as LEDs, simple LCD displays, and other hardware.

We want to create an environment that encourages creative thinking and problem solving.  We will encourage the use and creation of new open source software.

About the teams

Teams can be comprised of as few as one and as many as five people.  A maximum of ten teams can register.  Teams can sign up via Eventbrite.

About the competition

Official competition development will run from Saturday @ 10am until Sunday @ 4pm.  Each team will have 5 minutes to present their build to the other teams.  The builds will be judged by the other teams.  Points will be tallied to determine the winners.

About the judging

Builds will be judged on several criteria: (1) does it work? (2) what is it supposed to do and how well does it do it? (3) novelty (4) usefulness/entertainment value.  Each of these scoring criteria will have a ranking of 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest).  The team with the highest final score wins first prize, the second highest scoring team wins second prize, and the third highest scoring team wins third prize.  While the first, second, and third place winners will receive prize money, all teams will be going home with their Raspberry Pi and accessories (power adapter, SD card, etc.)

What we will provide

Each team will be provided with one Raspberry Pi computer, an AC adapter for the Pi, and an 8GB flash card with Raspbian OS preloaded.  After the competition has concluded, these three items will be given to each team just for participating in this competition.  We will also have several additional SD cards on hand in case a team corrupts their OS beyond repair.

We will provide some breakfast items, lunch, and dinner for Saturday.  We will provide some breakfast items and lunch for Sunday.

We will provide a total of $600.00 in prize money.  The prize distribution will be $300 for the first place team, $200 for the second place team, and $100 for the third place team.

What to bring

Laptop with power cable (not required but recommended), your own preliminary research and reference materials, phone and charger (also not required), ideas.
