Friends and family of Richie Szorc have come together to plan a benefit to help with the financial difficulties that they have faced with the recent diagnosis and long road that lies ahead in his recovery. For those of you who haven't followed his story, here is a little information of this journey over the past few months:
Soon after the New Year Richie started to have pain in his back that just wouldn’t go away. After several months of visits to chiropractor’s, doctors, emergency rooms and after trying numerous medications Richie still had no answers and he was admitted to the hospital on March 9, 2013. Then on the morning March 15th, Richie woke up paralyzed from the waist down. After an MRI and a CT scan of his spine they found a lesion stretching over 75% within his spinal cord. Richie went to the Mayo Clinic for a second opinion where he spent ten days undergoing additional tests, along with an operation to remove 3 lymph nodes in his chest.
The Mayo clinic diagnosed Richie with Neurosarcoidosis, a rare autoimmune disease that in Richie's case not only manifested in the lymph nodes and the tissue of his lungs but also attacked his spinal cord causing transverse myelitis leaving him with nerve damage and partial paralysis from the waist down.
Richie is now facing significant, mounting financial difficulties. It will be a long road ahead and although Richie is unable to work and it is difficult for him to get around, as of today he is walking with a walker and fighting to get back to the way he was just a few short months ago. Richie Jr. (10) and McKenna (8) are his biggest and proudest cheerleaders!
Thank you so much for taking your time to read his story and all your thoughts and prayers for the family over the past few months!
