Screening "Viva la Muerte" with Fernando Arrabal
Anthology Film Archives
Wed 14 at 7.30pm
Anthology is honored to host Fernando Arrabal ? renowned playwright, novelist, poet, filmmaker, Surrealist, and Pataphysician ? for a special screening of his notorious feature film, VIVA LA MUERTE. One of the most controversial and taboo-busting artists of his time, Arrabal is an incredibly prolific writer (with literally hundreds of books and plays to his name), as well as the director of seven feature films, and the co-founder, along with Roland Topor and Alejandro Jodorowsky, of the Panic Movement, a collective inspired by and named after the god Pan, and influenced by Luis Buñuel and Antonin Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty.
Arrabal's debut feature, based on his own novel, is a shocking and unforgettable protest against totalitarian patriarchy that tells the story of a boy whose mother betrays his father to the Fascists during the Spanish Civil War. Using haunting, hallucinatory imagery to reveal the boy's subconscious, VIVA LA MUERTE is a surreal tour de force.
"A paroxysm of anguish, a scream for liberty and probably one of the most ferocious, violent films ever made." - Amos Vogel, VILLAGE VOICE
