Radical Failure, Rigorous Fun- A physical theatre workshop by Laurel & Ewen

‘The clown is not a character, it’s a state of playing’ – Giovanni Fusetti
Performance partners/Royal Frog Ballet artistic associates/real-life husband and wife Laurel Butler and Ewen Wright bring their unique approach to clown and physical theater to the Boulder Circus Center for three days of physical investigation and deep inquiry into clown as a state of being - not a character or aesthetic style, but a radical way of existing in the world.
Let’s see what happens if we spend three days with each other in this state – failing together, attempting together despite our failures, dancing hopelessly to bad music, peeling away the performative layers that we use to navigate our daily lives – in order to excavate the inexhaustible possibility and hilarious absurdity of every moment.
We'll also discover ways to expand our dynamic range as performers, making space for a range of embodied states and opening up the possibility of new characters and theatrical modes to add to our creative repertoires.
At the end of the three days, workshop participants will have the opportunity to perform in an ensemble score as the opening act Laurel and Ewen’s new show, SEPTEMBER, live at the Nomad on Thursday July 31st!
No performance experience necessary: physical theater and clown training is an excellent addition to the toolkit for anyone who wants to move through the world in a more authentic state of wonder and receptivity. All you need is movement clothes, a bottle of water, and a willingness to not try to be funny. Red noses will be provided.
Includes three evening workshops, one evening performance, and a nose!
