The 8 Elements™ Approach Overview
The 8 Elements™ is a process-based approach developed by Rachel Brice. It is rooted in Tribal Fusion, American Tribal and American Cabaret belly dance styles, other contemporary and ethnic dance forms, and Viniyoga™.
The 8 Elements™ is a multi-phase training designed to impart a strong, creative and dynamic foundation to one’s belly dance practice, and as a way to complement and converse with the many belly dance styles. The intention of this approach is not to teach a set style of belly dance, but to explore the underlying architecture of many dance styles, honoring traditions, while encouraging discovery, excellence, innovation and joy.
8 Elements™ Intensive III: Culmination
Culmination, phase three of the 8 Elements™ training, continues with the refinement of technique and musicality, and focuses on improvisation, choreography, and performance elements of belly dance. In addition to daily technique training, participants will create original pieces. We will discuss group rehearsal, challenges presented by rehearsal and performance, and optimal conditions for group work.
Culmination is where the 8 Elements™ training is applied to actual experience in rehearsal and performance settings. At the completion of Phase III, participants will receive a document recognizing them as Practitioners of the 8 Elements™ approach. They may then be eligible for application to Phase IV, Teacher Training, provided that they complete all requirements and have consistently displayed respectful and positive behavior toward other participants and themselves throughout all three intensives.
Culmination is only open to dancers who have completed Initiation and Cultivation.
Testing for Recognition and Certification
The 8 Elements™ program is an approach for exploration and development of personal dance practice, with the opportunity to join a network of other dancers and teachers who have displayed a degree of commitment and proficiency. The 8 Elements™ offers two types of certifications: A Practitioner’s Certification and a Teacher’s Certification.
The Practitioner’s Certification will be offered for participants who complete phases I - III, and who satisfy the project and testing requirements for each phase. The Teacher’s Certification will be offered after the completion of phase IV, the Teacher Training phase and its requirements. A document of recognition will be provided for those who complete each phase. Participants who complete all phases, projects, and testing, earning the Teacher’s Certification, will be certified to teach material from the 8 Elements™ approach.
More information about Rachel Brice's 8 Elements™ method, and benefits of the Teaching certification can be found here.
Requirements for the Intensive
Completion of Phases I-II: Initiation and Cultivation, with testing and project requirements satisfied.
A minimum of 1 year of belly dance training.
English language proficiency in both reading and writing.
A willingness to work with others and actively participate in an intensive group setting.
The ability to dance at least 7+ hours per class day without injury.
Each participant must be at least 18 years of age.
Additional Pre-Intensive Requirements for Testing
We turn up the volume and ask a little more from you, knowing that with preparation you can handle it, and that you love to be pushed to the limit!
In preparation for Phase III: Culmination, if you are planning on testing for the Practitioner's Certification, we require you submit:
• Three (3) months of practice logs (to be turned in at the end of each month). Details after registration. Late practice logs will not be accepted.
• Two (2) book reports to be turned in by the first day (no exceptions). Details after registration.
• Submit one (1) video of a solo or group choreography, fully costumed, with detailed choreographic notes (no exceptions). Due 1st day of intensive. Details after registration.
How to Prepare For Testing
The written test for Phase III will encompass all three intensives, so, in short, you'll be studying more than the previous two intensives combined. Be sure you know all the material in study guides 1 and 2 before you get here to ease the process. You will have the option to order the most current version of the study guide at cost after you register, or you can reference the current copy at the intensive.
The practical test will focus on technique, and to obtain a Practitioner's Certification, you will need to achieve an "advanced-intermediate" level of technique proficiency in several areas including, but not limited to, zils, spins, vocabulary, strength, posture, focus, flexibility, balance, agility, stamina, timing, musicality, and the other elements in the physical profile (graph) from your Initiation booklet.
For this reason, your practice logs are required before the intensive begins. If there are sticking points in the development of your technique and you need to test again, your logs will be a valuable tool for assessing your practice. Details about scoring rubric for the practical exam will be provided before the intensive.
The fee for testing will be $45. Registration for testing will be handled separately at the intensive.
To complete Phase III and be eligible for Phase IV, Transmission, participants will have 6 months to complete a final performance project that clearly displays their understanding of all 8 Elements. This final project will be detailed at the intensive.
